Samsung Announces ‘The GALAXY Mega.’ Available, This May.

Not one to be upstaged by Apple’s use of ‘descriptive’ branding terms, Samsung on Friday announced the launch of its ‘GALAXY Mega’ – a series of smartphones from the Korean manufacturer that are set arrive in both 6.3-inch and 5.8-inch display flavours.

Featuring much bigger displays in terms of diagonal length compared to its previous offerings, the newest addition to the GALAXY family is said to “[balance] an optimal viewing experience on a 6.3-inch HD screen, yet “is ultra-thin and portable enough to put into a pocket or hold in one hand.”

As for the handset’s key features, the GALAXY Mega is set to arrive with ‘Group Play’, (a feature that enables easy content sharing for up to 8 devices on the same Wi-Fi network), alongside ‘Samsung WatchON,’ (a feature which transforms the device into an IR remote controller for a richer TV experience).

Samsung says that “WatchON” allows you to “connect the device to your home entertainment system,” and it will “provide program recommendations, schedules, and even remotely control your TV.”

In addition, you’ll also be able to use ‘Samsung Link’ to easily stream your photos, videos, notes, or music to your television, tablet or computer. For those who want to become fluent in other languages, Samsung’s ‘S Translator’ will “provide instant translation” of what you say or key into the smartphone, using “text or voice translation.” The feature works on most text input applications, including: Email and ChatON.

‘ChatON’(for those unaware) – allows you to share what’s currently on your screen with friends to “stay more connected.” Think AirPlay, only … with friends.

Unlike other competing smartphone offerings, Samsung notes that The GALAXY Mega offers users a mix of popular smartphone and tablet features, such as “an effortless user experience, a split screen, [and] multitasking between video and other apps.”

The handset will be available to purchase by customers in both Europe and Russia starting, this May. Availability of the ‘The GALAXY Mega’ is expected to roll-out gradually per world region, as this year progresses.

Samsung is, however, yet to announce final pricing for its new high-end handsets.
