Three UK has announced this week that it will soon introduce a set of new tariffs, that will see new customers joining the network or the first time limited to just 2GB of tethering data per month.

That rule will also stand “even if the agreement includes ‘unlimited’ data consumption via a smartphone,” according to TheNextWeb.

In a statement given to the publication, earlier this week, a Three spokesperson confirmed that there will be no immediate changes for existing customers who are currently locked into a contract, although the company does expect most people will “eventually transition across to the new [offerings]” as they come to upgrade their smartphones.

“The company also said that making the distinction between mobile device traffic and tethered traffic is essential to ensure a good level of service for everyone on the network, and to ensure that they can continue to offer unlimited data on smartphones,” Ben Woods reports for TNW.

“For an indication of pricing if you do still want an unlimited data plan (limited to 2GB while tethering still), an iPhone 5s will cost around £29 up-front and will then cost £44 per month,” he says.

Just how popular these new plans will be among customers, is unclear. The announcement arrives just hours after Apple launched an 8GB version of its iPhone 5C in both the UK, and several other European markets.
