With speculation still swirling regarding the possibility of Apple introducing a wearable product before this year is out, (especially now that former YSL CEO, Paul Deneve, is onboard), PatentlyApple reported over the weekend that market competitor Samsung could be about to beat the company to the punch, by launching its own smartwatch ahead of the firm’s expected September media event.
According to the site, Samsung is currently planning to publicly debut the product at a media event it has scheduled for September 6.
“Samsung [is] planning to release their new Galaxy Note III on September 6 alongside the debut of their new [smartwatch] which is noted as a being a ‘Samsung Gear’ smartphone accessory.”
While specific details on the wrist product are still unknown, the South Korean smartphone (and tablet) manufacturer is now expected to introduce the product alongside “a new smartphone,” which, the report says, could drop in early September, and tout a new 20MP camera.
This, it says, is “likely to beat Apple’s next iPhone camera at 12MP.” It is not yet known if the Galaxy Note III will have the ability to connect to Samsung’s rumoured ‘wrist’-based product, but we imagine it likely will.
News that Samsung may be set to beat Apple to market with its wrist-top platform, follows the company also announcing that it is set to launch its brand-new Exynos 5 Octa system-on-a-chip processor – (nicknamed the “ARM superchip”), later this week.
Whether or not the Galaxy Note III will carry this processor, is yet to be seen. However, the chip is described as being “more powerful [and] enhanced” than its predecessor.
