Nokia Announces Lumia 1020 (With 41-Megapixel Camera). Available To Preorder, July 16.

Don’t get us wrong: We’ve got nothing against Hipstamatic. It’s a super-capable app for taking and editing your photos. It just probably wasn’t the best choice for Nokia executives to use to show the world it’s “keeping up” with the mobile photo-sharing space.

Nonetheless, that’s exactly what the company did do when it announced the Nokia Lumia 1020 — a doosey of a smartphone which carries a 41-megapixel autofocus ‘PureView’ camera, with a 1/1.5″ BSI sensor, 6-lens ZEISS optics, and “optical image stabilisation” — on Friday.

Capable of taking both 40-megapixel and 5-megapixel photographs, simultaneously, the new device is also capable of recording video at 1080p resolution with “lossless” zoom.

“You can zoom in up to 4 times in 1080p mode and up to 6 times when shooting 720p video without sacrificing much in terms of quality. Sound is recorded in stereo and is guaranteed to be crisp and deep thanks to the two wide dynamic range microphones on board,” GSM Arena explains.

Measuring just 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4 mm, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is expected to become available through U.S wireless carrier AT&T on July 26, for $299.99. That’s exclusive of a two-year contract you’ll also have to sign-up to upon choosing to purchase the handset.

Preorders for the device go live – July 16.
